What it is
How we approach Pre-Op Training (Prehab)
Surgery outcomes aren’t shaped only in the operating room. Research consistently shows that patients who arrive at surgery stronger, more mobile, and better educated recover faster, regain function sooner, and often depend less on pain medication afterward. That preparation window is called prehab — and it’s one of the most underused tools in modern healthcare.
At Arogya Physical Therapy, prehab is built around your specific procedure. A knee replacement has very different demands than a rotator cuff repair or spinal fusion. Abhisha Patel, PT, DPT, MS, assesses the weakness patterns and mobility restrictions that typically follow your surgery type, then builds a targeted program to address them in the weeks before you go under — so your recovery starts ahead of schedule.
There’s also a psychological component that’s easy to overlook. Patients who understand what to expect after surgery, and who arrive feeling physically prepared, report less anxiety and better outcomes. Prehab sessions include education on post-op protocols, what early recovery actually looks like, and how to advocate for yourself in the recovery process.
Prehab is available in-clinic at our Leander location or via telehealth after your initial assessment, serving patients across the North Austin Corridor.

Common questions
FAQ
How far in advance of surgery should I start prehab?
Ideally, four to eight weeks before your procedure — but even two weeks of focused preparation has measurable impact. If your surgery is sooner, we'll work with the time available and make it count.
Will my insurance cover prehab?
Coverage varies by plan and diagnosis. Contact your insurance provider to ask about pre-operative physical therapy benefits. We're happy to provide documentation to support your request.
Can I do prehab via telehealth?
Yes. Once the initial in-clinic assessment is done, many prehab sessions can be conducted via telehealth — especially for home program guidance and progressions.
My surgeon didn't mention prehab. Should I ask?
Yes. Prehab is still underutilized in most surgical pathways, but surgeons generally support it when patients advocate for it. You can also come directly to us as a starting point.
